Grandma's Cookie Recipe

graciehickman6

I can vividly remember eyeing my grandma's cookie jar every time I came to visit. She always had fresh cookies waiting for her grandchildren, neighbors, and friends. This cookie recipe comes straight from my grandmother's cook book and it will take you back to being six-years-old at grandma's house.

Grandma's Famous Cookies

The Cookie Jar

I think we can all remember a time when we had to visit grandma's house. Some people think of playing with dusty legos, watching the same three VHS tapes over and over again, or pestering the ancient dog that has been apart of the family five times as long as you have.

Although some of my visits to grandma's house felt much like I just described, I think of cookies when I think of my grandma.

My grandma always had a cookie jar set high up on the shelf in her kitchen. It was a white jar that was shaped like a baker with a large hat on. It was a fat jar, with just enough room to hold a dozen cookies.

I remember sitting at the kitchen table while my grandma prepped dinner, staring down the cookie jar and plotting how I would climb up and sneak a few cookies before dinner.

My grandma was no idiot, and was well aware this is why I wanted to "help" her make dinner every time I came to visit. Years later, my grandma told me she would chuckle watching me eye that cookie jar, knowing the wheels were spinning in my head trying to get a cookie before dinner.

The Infamous Cookies

Remember how I said there were always cookies in the jar? Well, most of the time there was an assortment of cookies in the cookie jar! My grandma really spoiled us, didn't she?

You would often find oatmeal raisin cookies (although those were not really celebrated amongst the grandchildren), classic chocolate chip, and even peanut butter. But my very favorite cookies were Cowboy Cookies.

What is a Cowboy Cookie you ask? Aside from being the best cookie I have ever devoured, these cookies are loaded with coconut flakes, butterscotch chips, chocolate, and pecans.

These cookies are the perfect spin-off of the classic chocolate chip cookie. I am a HUGE fan of the basic chocolate chip but dare I say it, I think Cowboy Cookies take the cake (or the cookie in this instance).

Delicious right?

The Recipe

I know you are all going to ask so I'll address the elephant in the room right. YES, I am going to share the recipe with you all. But on one condition, you have to make these cookies and share them with your friends. I don't make the rules (my grandma does), I just enforce them.

Grandma's Famous Cowboy Cookies

  • 2/3 cup shortening

  • 2/3 cup butter or margarine, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup brown sugar (packed)

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

  • 3 cups flour

  • 1 teaspoon soda

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup chopped nuts

  • 1 package chocolate chips

  • 1 package butterscotch chips

  • 1 cup shredded coconut

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Mix shortening, butter, sugars, eggs and vanilla thoroughly. Blend in remaining ingredients. (For a softer, rounder cookie, add 1/2 cup flour.)

Drop dough by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart onto un-greased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until light brown. Cool slightly before removing from baking sheet. About 7 dozen cookies!

I hope you enjoy these cookies and always remember to keep your loved ones close.

Enjoy! xoxo
